Medicare has four parts: Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drug coverage).
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers and provide an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits, often including additional coverage like dental and vision.
vs
Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans are private insurance policies designed to cover some of the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as deductibles and copayments.
You're typically eligible to enroll during the Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and continues for three months after. However, if you are already covered under a group insurance plan, you do not need to participate until your other insurance runs out.
If you don't have prescription drug coverage through another source (like an employer), enrolling in Part D can help cover the costs of prescription medications. If you don't initially enroll in a Prescription Drug Plan you could face penalties later on.
